Art Nude / Erotic / Sensual and the near world of Pornography
'Metamorphosis – The Beast' by Jackson Carvalho
This is something close to my heart as an Art Nude photographer and I have had this dilemma from the beginning.
Family members and Camera club members and of course the internet with Facebook and Instagram raise this question.
But this has been with artists since the beginning of time. Even great classics like the Botticelli’s Birth of Venus have been the centre of censorship and controversy and also Edouard Manet's "Olympia" in 1865, which when exhibited needed police protection from the public. Of course in the news recently the school teacher in Florida was fired for showing students the Statue of David by Di Vinci.
Facebook/Instagram bans me if a female nipple is shown in my photograph, but not a male nipple. As an Art Nude photographer we always have the discussion on what and why we do what we do.
So what is Art Nude photography?
For me, when the male or female nude is the subject of the image it is not his or her sexuality displayed but the beauty of the human form. This can be made through lighting, posing etc to accentuate the beauty of the human form. But what a photographer can’t control is the viewer’s reaction to this image – admiration, desire or moral disgust. But in the case of the model and the photographer we are not in any way trying to convey a sexual reaction to our work. All nude art depicts nudity. Pornography depicts eroticism to sexually stimulate, with or without nudity. Just because photography shows the naked body, does not automatically qualify it as pornography. A grey area these days is on Social media sites where nudity is seen as offensive and all our Art Nude work regarded as pornography. This is strange because the erotic use of clothing such as lingerie is always a more grey area for the feeling of an image to sexually titillate the viewer this being the area of Erotic Art Photography.
Summary:
* Nudity in art nude photography is natural and is meant to let the audience appreciate the human body while pornography is intentionally done to arouse sexual feelings in the audience.
* Models of nude artworks pose naturally and do not convey any eroticism while pornographic models have expressions and poses that are erotic and sexually arousing.
*Nudity in art is accepted in society while nudity in pornography is seen as inappropriate and is banned in most societies.

Erotic Art Photography.
All nude art depicts nudity. Erotic art depicts eroticism, with or without nudity.
Erotic photography is a style of art photography of an erotic, sexually suggestive, or sexually provocative nature. Clothing, the mood of the image, the pose and the look of the model all create this mood. This has created a great deal confusion and discussion with censorship over the years and indeed still does but of course many of these images do not always have nudity at their core. Some of the greatest photographers have used this genre to create great works of ART over the years.
For example: Helmut Newton / Ellen von Unwerth
Of course this genre also has many levels to it Glamour / Boudoir / Pinup historically have been regarded as Erotic photography. Many great Fashion photographers have used this style for example a lot of Helmut Newtons work involves Fashion clothes.

Vladimir Funtak PRO There are many nude humans on photos that are neither Art nude neither pornography, like nude boys in Africa taking care of their live-stock or pregnant woman images because the fact they were nude is irrelevant. Theory on presenting nude body like a beautiful form is not very convincing to me because the model could easily were a tight costume. To me, art photo is the one that sometimes use a naked body or part of human body to transfer specific mood, for example, sportsperson dressing room after lost game could and would have some of the player naked, half naked, under the shower but all sed because of lost game. No porn no Art nude. |
