The world of photography has almost no boundaries. We can let our imagination fly and create wonderful pieces capturing widely different subjects, ranging from a majestic landscape to an emotional portrait.
Photographing children can be particularly rewarding. Their innocence, spontaneity and unique expressions can produce magical results. These little angels can fill you with joy with their innocent faces.
However, working with them may be quite challenging at times. Children can certainly make you sweat and bring out every emotion you can feel, but it is definitely worth it.
Ewa Cwikla, from the Netherlands, specializes in dreamlike children portraits. She is one of our lovable members in 1X. While describing her work, she says: “it's always magic” and “children are my easiest models”. She lets children feel free and be themselves, while patiently waiting to capture the perfect moment. She specially enjoys when they remember her as the nice lady from the studio.
She normally organizes her shootings carefully, but the plans can change. “It will always depend on the children”, she says. She exploits her creativity and the results often excel her expectations. Below I present some of her beautiful and stunning work.
Kharinova Uliana, from Russia, specializes in children and teen portraits. Her black and white portraits are a delight. They convey emotions and feelings, establishing a unique connection with the viewer.
She mentioned to me “when I take children photographs, I want my work to tell all about them”. She believes that “children are a different world, and they have a different perception of reality, values, and desires. Children believe in miracles, fairies and princesses. They are always honest and sincere”. And yes, she is right. Children have a wonderful fantasy world inside that, unfortunately, many of us lose as we grow up.
She also says: “with children, I can easily find a common language”. For her, good lighting is crucial when working with kids. She needs an environment that lets her play with the camera. She waits, talks, laughs and has fun. She sees this process as an imitation game. When both her and the kids are ready, she simply asks them to look at the camera and “that’s where her art is born”. Here are some examples of her beautiful work, please take a look and enjoy.
Gemmy Woud-Binnendijk is a fine art photographer from the Netherlands. Her works radiate her passion for painting and drawing. Contemplating her photographs, her phrase “a nowadays portrait in the light of the past is born” comes immediately to mind.
Her love for children and animals, and her exceptional creativity helps make every one of her photographs a piece of art. She says: “I try to capture the inner side of a child, the silence, and serenity within”. She doesn't consider that working with children is hard. She tries to generate a relaxed atmosphere free of pressure. Her sessions can last anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours, depending on the connection she creates with the children. She plans her shooting “mostly when she is working with a team”, but then almost everything happens spontaneously. Regarding this process, she says: “I find it absolutely magical!”. Please take a look of some of her incredible works.

Malcolm Bell PRO Mawkish, except for one or two by Kharinova that look like pictures of actual 21st century children, rather than 16th century ones. I have 4 children. I can't see much here that tells me anything about real childhood |
